So a friend next door came to ask for some advice.
Despite the countless times that I told him that I'm from Malaysia, he wanted to confirm if I'm from Malaysia. Okla, tak kisah.
Anyway, he told me that he'd be going to Langkawi for a conference and wanted to know some 'important' stuff about Malaysia that I'm more than happy to share.
Despite the countless times that I told him that I'm from Malaysia, he wanted to confirm if I'm from Malaysia. Okla, tak kisah.
Most of the questions were pretty normal, but then he also wanted to know if;
1. It is ok to dress like he was (in T-shirt and a 3 quarter cargo pants) or does he have to constantly be casually-dressed (which he "thinks" consists of a pair of jeans and a neat t-shirt/shirt) for sight-seeing and sailing (terkejut aku dgr, biar betul dia nak sailing? Gamak nye la kot. Org sini jarang dpt merasa laut)
2. There are certain symbols that he shouldnt have on his t-shirt.
3. It is okay to smile to girls (huh?)
So I told him that he doesnt have to act all weird there. His appearance and demeanor are considered perfectly normal there (maybe extra hensem kot, serious hensem and agak kelakar plus sikit blur). And not to worry too much about interacting with the locals. I'm a typical Malaysian, just take me as an example and you'll be fine.
Bukan apa, dia kata kita negara Islam, tu dia cuak sgt tu... hmmm, patut ler...
Esok lusa dia tak datang, so next Tuesday, dia nak tanya lg. Let's see apa pulak dia nak tanya kali ni...

aku pon pernah kena ngan member yg nak melancong ke msia. diorg mmg ingt msia neg yg pakai burqa hehe
Hehe, cute soalan-soalan dia. And the fact that he has made an effort to ask those questions before coming, caya la!
ex-colleague aku terkejut dulu bila dpt tau ade ade bf. die ingat malaysia cam conservative turks. takleh ade bf. aku ckp org malaysia quite liberal.
hehe.
Wahaha..ckp kat dia jgn buka baju tgh town sbb pns sude..
hahahaha! teringat dulu tunggu (ex)bf kt klcc, there's a white-man nak tanya bank.dkt 3 4 kali dia tanya is it ok i'm talking to u? .dia kata dia 1st time dtg malaysia n tak penah tegur perempuan melayu sbb tak berani. takut dilarang. but that time i was the nearest. pastu he was so suprised i was studying degree in a Uni. aiyok! hahaha..
I think this has a lot to do with our govt promoting us as an islamic country. Aku rasa tu saja for economic reason je, sbb byk negara2 arab ni yg kaya2. Padahal common law kita clear2 bukan islamic sgt pon, syariah law pon tak enforced sgt.
oyis,
dia tgk ko pon bole ingat camtu ek?
mrm,
dia tu mmg selalu ckp yg cute2 pon. Tergelak2 aku nak menjawab sampai dia pelik sbb aku rasa soalan2 dia tu funny.
moose,
turks pon ada yg super-liberal, tak pulak dia ingat malaysians camtu ek?
fika79,
Hah! Aku ada nak warning camtu. But i dont think he's tht crazy. Tp aku penah nampak mamat chinese muda bergaya, topless kat dlm sunway pyramid. Macamla dlm tu takde aircon... maybe baju dia terkoyak kot (cuba fikir positive)
kecik,
adoiiii, dia ingat kita ni oppressed kot. Tp dia tu nak ngorat ke apa sampai tanya blajar kat uni sume...
tu la. mcm la aku ni pki burqa. dia ingat aku jd over-liberal kot dtg neg dia hehe. oo satu lg, ramai yg ingt aku kawen ala2 muda (ehem) sbb family atur. postgrad kat sini kan byk sampai 30-40 thn x nak setel down lg. aku ckp, x la, aku yg gedik.
Hope he doesnt have misconceptions about Muslims. Some westerners believe that Muslims worship a black box in the middle of the desert 5 times a day... and that if we kill non muslims... we'd get 70++ virgins in heaven (girls dapat hunks kot?)... hehehehe. Although this maybe "a bit" extreme, and not to mention very2 false... some people claim that there are (or were?) books written about Muslims as being like this. Hahaha!
oyis,
mmg ko kawin muda pon (ehem), cuma tak atur jek. Eh, sini, postgrad budak postgrad byk dah kawin, in fact, byk yg kawin quite awal sbb nak reduce tax reduction, cam hampeh kan?
troxion,
Yeah, the black box thing, i think they'd never get the reason why we pray in tht direction, unless we explain it to them. As for this guy, i doubt he thinks much about Islam, but since he'd be going to an 'islamic' country, maybe he googled lonely planet or something. The thing about the symbol thing, the pants etc sound a lot like their general advice to travelers going to an islamic country. Guess they probably didnt add that we're not very islamic pon sebenarnya...
